Lot description

Paris, J. Chéreau "rue S.t Jacques pres la fontaine S.t Severin N°. 257", [ca. 1791 or 1801?]

Metal engraving enhanced with watercolour, 23,7 x 19,4 cm, on laid paper, 34 x 21,7 cm (sl. faded, stitching passim).

Laid down on blue cardboard sheet.

The Yellow Dwarf game, which appeared around 1760, was renamed Lindor during the Revolution. The two names coexisted until the name "Yellow Dwarf" became established in the 19th century. The address of Jacques-Simon II Chéreau (after 1761-1807) at No. 257 was used from 1791 to 1805. However, the presence of "St" (saint) in front of Jacques and Séverin excludes the years 1793 to 1800, during which symbols reminiscent of royalty and religion were outlawed. This print may therefore have been published either around 1791-92, despite the allusions to royalty (notably the fleurs-de-lis on the queen's coat), or around 1801-1805.
Ref. D'Allemagne I:286-290. - BnF. - Richard, François - "Lindor ou Nain jaune: vers la solution d'une énigme! (1re partie)", in Le Vieux Papier, n. 406, 2012, pp. 1-8 (similar print by Vaugeois dated 1788 described on p. 5). Thanks to the author for the information he kindly provided.
