Lot description

2 vol., 8vo: [1 map and 2 engr. pp.]-x-xxix-228, engr. title-167, [1]-121-1 pp. (some min. browning, very sl. spotting, faint dampstaining on upper margins 2nd vol.).

Contemp. tree calf, gilt orn. flat spines, red leather title label, black leather vol. numbers (spines restored, corners rubbed and sl. bumped, def. at heads). Good copy.

First edition of this "road book" by the British Army officer and cartographer, known for his road atlases, D. Paterson (1739-1825). Ill. with 2 engr. titles, a hand-coloured double-page engr. map in the first vol. "General view of the direct roads of England & Wales" and 358 engr. strip maps printed 2 to a page and back to back. Paterson's Itinerary is reminiscent of the work of the Scottish carthographer Ogilby (1600-1676), but this work combines roadmaps with itineraries. In addition "Paterson was among the first to include any sheets for Scotland" (Fordham, 1914, p.43).
Ref. ESTC T93554.
