Odysseus in the land of the Laestrygones.

1780

Drawing, pen and brown ink, 19,4 x 26,5 cm, laid paper, signed and dated at bottom left: "Roland fecit 1780 (?)" (small holes on framing line at top right, small light stain at centre right, small repaired tear at bottom centre, collector's marks at bottom left and right).

Laid down on passe-partout. Good condition and provenance.

Odysseus and two men fleeing by boat at lower right, while the rest is being attacked by the man-eating giants at upper left. Careful drawing after an etching by Theodoor van Thulden from 1632 (cf. Hollstein XXX.116.55). Van Thulden based his series of etchings on the lost 16th-century frescoes by Francesco Primaticcio and Niccolò dell'Abate at Fontainebleau.
