Lot description

Folio: [36]-566-[2] pp. (slightly dampstained in the margin, more heavily in the first pp., light foxing on scattered pp.). Inside a good copy.

Cont. blind-stamped calf, covers ruled with ornamental roll-stamps and fillets, spine on raised bands (rebacked, small def., manuscript vellum pastedowns).

First edition of the Latin translation by Guarino da Verona and Gregorio Tifernate edited by the Rhineland reformer Conrad Heresbach (1496-1576). Finely engraved woodcut title border by J. Faber after Hans Holbein the Younger, printed for the first time in this edition, representing the busts of classical authors and the crowning of Homerus by the Muses, two ornamented borders (1st p. of dedication and 1st p. on text), 18 initials from the "Large alphabet with children", head-pieces and friezes and also Curio's device on reverse of last leaf.
