Lot description
Little in-4° : [10] pp., 34 pl. (minor foxing, some little stains, tear restored on the dedication plate, pl. 21 placed after pl. 25).
19th century binding : decorated paper, flat spine, red etches (used, lacks of paper on the spine, rubbed corners and cuts).
First edition of a political emblem book. Copy complete with 1 frontispiece with a view of Nuremberg, 1 dedication plate with coat of arms of the Senators, dated 1617, and 32 plates of emblems, engraved by Peter Isselburg (1580- c. 1630) after the paintings of the great chamber of the city hall of Nuremberg. The explanatory text gives verses in German, and bibliographical references in Latin. Both the text and the Latin poems below each emblem are by George Remus (1561-1625). Bound with 2 other emblem books printed at Nuremberg: (1). PFANN, Johann - Biblische Emblemata und Figüren welche in den zweijen Verneürten Stuben, desz Hospitals zum Heiligen Geist in Nürmberg [...]. [Nuremberg], 1626. Engr. frontispiece, 16 pl. of emblems, engr. statement "Diese hieneben stehende Tafel...", engr. list of benefactors (lacks folding pl. of benefactors). The secondary frontispiece "Aigentlicher Abrisz der neüen im Spital ufgehengten Tafeln [...]" is curiously placed at the beginning of the following work, in replacement of the lacking title-page (sl. foxing).-- (2).
