Lot description

8vo: [12]-800 pp. (prelim. quire bound in wrong order; paper age-toned).

17th-c. richly gold-tooled Fanfare-style calf, covers with double framed ornamental rows, elaborate nicely tooled corner pieces, central oval with a winged burning heart and the device “et volabo et requiescam”, flat spine with a framed ornamental row and a perpendicular central row of flowery circles (sl. rubbed, corners bumped). Sold as a binding w.a.f.

First part (of 2), complete in itself, of a state-of-the-art Greek-Latin ed. of Euripides’ plays. Woodcut mark on title. The binding is tentatively ascribed to the Paris workshop of Pierre Rocolet and Antoine Padeloup (1638-1662) (pencil note on front endpaper). Ref.
