18th c

Drawing, pen and brown ink, grey/brown wash, 4,9 x 9,6 cm, laid paper, signed in the lower right corner "HS" (sl. creased in left margin).

Mounted on cardb. support, under passe-partout.

Charming view of an old tower near the water with two boats in the distance.
Spilman (1721-1784) was a painter and engraver from the Northern Netherlands (Haarlem). He enrolled in 1742 as a member of the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke. He was a pupil of Abraham de Haen. He is best known for his topographical drawings and engravings of cityscapes and important buildings. He made engravings after drawings by de Haen, Jan de Beijer, Cornelis Pronk, and Cornelis van Noorde in addition to his own work for various publications.

Joined: Marine view with two ships (19th c.). Same technique, 7,1 x 15,5 cm, laid paper, unsigned (sl. browned on right margin, pinholes in corners). Mounted on paper support. Prov. Same stamp on verso. (2 pcs)
