Lot description
12mo: [24]-274 pp. (some sl. foxing, occ. staining or soiling, lower margin repaired or strengthened to last quire N).
Mod. half blond leather, marbled paper covers, gilt ruled spine with raised bands.
Extremely rare second edition (1st 1672) of the work mainly composed of the letters of Guattini to his father and published by Carli. The Capuchins Guattini (1637-1668) and Carli embarked from Genoa in 1667 for a mission to the Kingdom of Kongo, but 3 months after their arrival in the region of Mbamba, Guattini died. Carli, gravely ill, succeeded in reaching Bologna in 1671 and published the letters of his companion in 1672. It contains a very detailed account of their travels, their stops in Lisboa and Bahia, tempests, corsair attacks, etc. The book is also very interesting because it includes the second known account of Recife (Brazil) after the expulsion of the Dutch. Laudatory poems in Italian and Latin dedicated to the authors in the prelims.
