Lot description

53 photos, b/w, captioned in French, various formats, stuck on paper (some faded).

Registration book, folio (somewhat torn, some lvs disbound).

In July 1895, the Tetela regiment of Luluabourg (mostly composed of Batatela) revolted after the execution of their leader Ngongo Lutete, accused of treason to the Congo Free State (I.E.C.), but also after the interdiction of polygamy and distribution of women to Belgian soldiers, Captain Pelzer's physical abuse to the native population, the lack of food, etc. Officer Pelzer was killed and officer Cassart seriously wounded during the fight. In order to counter the leaders of the rebels, Kandolo and Kimpore, it was decided to build a camp in "Mukaboa" [Mukabwa, Kassaï] and protect the nearest religious mission. Attractive photos: 8 of the settlement in Mukabwa, 4 of Florent Cassart and 1 of Prosper Cassart, the grave of Brunseaux, 3 of St-Trudon mission in Sept. 1901, the departure by boat of lieutenant Lapière and his "boy" (later called "godson"), some photos of Lapière's house in Ypres. The majority of the photos show Congolese (women, men, families, workers as postmen, cook...), dignitaries, some craft (bread with manioc, basketry...). Some names noted in the captions: sergeant-major Florent Cassart, Prosper Cassart, Marcel Soenen, Droeven... Ref.
