Lot description
8vo: x-361-[38] pp. (occ. foxing, tear in map).
Publ. plain green cloth, flat spine with gilt title (corners bumped, sl. rubbed spine and edges).
Second ed. of Troup's highly critical narrative of the Emin Pasha relief expedition. Troup was the commander of the rear column but was deserted by Stanley in the Ituri forest where they languished for thirteen months without any supplies or news of the advance guard. This book not only puts a big question mark on Stanley's leadership ability but also casts a shadow over his reputation when he was at the height of his fame. Ill. with a coloured folding map and 15 pl.
