Lot description
Oblong 8vo: title f.-36 pl. (two repairs in blank margin of title and pl. 6 (ownership entries?), bl. fore-edge margin of pl. 16 cut shorter), cuv. 16,5 x 21 cm (ff. 21,5 x 31 cm).
Contemp. vellum spine, marbled paper on covers (rubbed). Plates in very good condition.
Series of 36 etched plates by Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), numbered 1-36 (incl. front.) after designs by Otto Van Veen (Vaenius, 1556-1629). Captions in Dutch and Latin. Latin text facing the plate, printed on verso of each previous plate. The series starts with an allegory on the peace between Rome and the Batavi, and illustrates the war of the Batavians against the Roman Empire between AD 69 and 70, based on Tacitus' history. The first pl. signed in the plate "Ant. Tempesta f. Anno 1611". In 1612, another (re)impression was published in Antwerp by Philippe Lisaert, without the explicative Latin text on versos.
