Lot description

Drawing, graphite pencil, 23 x 17 cm, wove paper, with ms. attribution on verso "Thomas Lawrence, portrait d'une dame" (brown stain at lower left, some sm. stains along the right edge).

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was one of the finest British portrait painters and the fourth president of the Royal Academy (following the death of Sir Joshua Reynolds). He is particularly known for his soft pencil drawings, which he made for the British upper class and aristocracy. In 2010 the National Portrait Gallery held a retrospective exhibition of Lawrence's work.
