Lot description
6 (of 12) engravings, 48 x 31 cm, laid paper with watermark (Strasbourg lily), signed in the plate "Abrahamus Bloemaert inv. / Fred. Bloemaert Sculp et exc." (some min. folds).
Plates 7 to 12 from the series of the Utrecht Bishops and prelates after designs by Abraham Bloemaert (1566–1651). He was working in the style of the "Haarlem Mannerists", but in the 16th century altered his style in line with the new Baroque style. Although he lived in the Protestant north, he remained a Roman Catholic for all of his life. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this series of Utrecht Bishops and prelates. Good impressions of only state, with good margins.
Ref. Hollstein III:8-14.1.
