Paul Gavarni (1804-1866) was a Parisian artist known for his often comical illustrations for journals or books. His favourite subject was Parisian street life in all its aspects. His first published drawings were for the magazine "Journal des modes", yet most of his best work appeared in "Le Charivari". His work was exceedingly popular, and his illustrations for books were eagerly sought for by publishers.
