Lot description

19th-c. gold-tooled brown morocco, covers with gilt central coat of arms and double gilt ruled border with corner pieces (crowned monograms), gilt spine with 4 raised bands, gilt inside border, a.e.g., marbl. endpapers. Excellent copy.

Apollonius of Tyana (15-ca. 100 A.D.) was a Neopythagorean sage at the beginning of the Christian era, of whose wanderings to India, ascetic teachings and miraculous powers we only have Philostratus’s account, which has been successively admired and dismissed as a fraud from the time of its writing. Hierocles of Nicomedia had drawn parallels between Apollonius and Christ, which provoked a reply from Eusebius. Printed in italics.
