Lot description
Drawing, pen and black ink, brown/sepia wash, traces of graphite, framing line in pen and black ink, 20,6 x 28,2 cm, laid paper with watermark (Pieter de Wert Comp; not in Heawood), unsigned (sm. stain at left, above putti blowing horns).
Stuck by upper corners under passe-partout.
A group of industrious putti or young boys playfully escorting a small carriage pulled by a goat. Others hang garlands around a statue of Janus, in preparation of festivities. The right foreground is dominated by a large antique vase or crater. Both subject matter and execution of the drawing with brown wash are comparable to drawings by Saint-Non after Fragonard's compositions.
Prov. Albert Van Loock (coll. stamp, L. 7351).
