Publ. half red shagreen, blind ruled red buckram on covers, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, a.e.g. (joints sl. rubbed).
First edition of this reworked version of the text, a part of it was already published in 1864 under the title "L'Amérique telle qu'elle est". Illustrated with 22 steel-engravings (front. incl.), of which 4 hand-coloured depicting an Indian camp, Poney-Post, the abduction of a colonist's wife by Indians and Lincoln receiving the Indian chiefs; the others fig. New York, Hudson river, Harpers Ferry, the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, the White House, New Orleans, Cincinnatti, etc. The French composer Comettant (1819-1898) made a long tour in the United States from 1852 to 1855 as a soloist. In his travel account, Comettant focusses on the American society and institutions.
