Contemp. three-quarter red shagreen, red buckram boards, gilt orn. flat spine, spr. edges (sm. part of front joint rubbed).
Second French edition (1st ed. in Italian: 1877-1878, 2 vol.; 1st in French: 1878) illustrated in black with the author's portrait in front., 53 full-p. ill. and many in-text. The Italian novelist and journalist De Amicis (1846-1908), best-known for his novel "Cuore", worked for the journal "La Nazionale" in Rome and his correspondence at that time served as base for his travel writings. His description of Constantinople is considered by many as the best 19th-c. description of the city.
