Lot description
4to: [32]-312 pp. (coat of arms of the Soderini missing).
Contemp. vellum, flat gilt-lettered spine, speckled edges.
First edition of the life of the Italian statesman of the Republic of Florence Piero di Tommaso Soderini (1451-1522) by the Italian monk, writer and scholar Razzi (1527-1611). Illustrated with an engr. allegorical floral front., an engr. portrait of Piero Soderini, an engr. title, an engr. portrait of Cardinal Francesco Soderini, 3 full-page engr. pl., 5 engr. head- and 5 engr. endpieces and 5 engr. initials all finely drawn by Girolamo Odam and engraved by Paolo Pilaia. Soderini was at the head of the city government from 1502 to 1512. His reign is controversial among historians. Can his rule be seen as an honest attempt to preserve the Republican Constitution or was his aim to establish an authoritarian principate?
