Lot description
Engraving, 75 x 60 cm, laid paper, signed in plate at lower right corner "Pet. Fanti. Bart. incidit". (horiz. centerfold, several tears in margins, some brown stains at upper right).
Large elevation of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti in Rome. Illustration from "Roma festeggiante nel Monte Pincio", by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, published in Venice in 1685. Coronelli's work records the celebrations in Rome for the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which withdrew religious toleration from France and encouraged the persecution of Protestants. Due to the tension at the time between Louis XIV and Innocent XI, the French ambassador to Rome, the Duc d'Estrées, considered that this event should be properly celebrated, as the Vatican showed no interest in doing so.
