Contemp. pigskin over wood, covers with central oval painted portrait of a duke of Saxony with coats of arms, spine with 3 raised bands, 8 silver corner pcs (not contemporary), tooled silver clasp and catch (also later), dark edges. Good, decorative copy.
Augmented ed. of the 1599 Moretus ed. of the "Panegyrici Veteres" by Jan Lievens (Livineus, Dendermonde 1546-1599). The Heidelberg librarian Janus Gruterus (1560-1627) revised Livineus work and added notes by V. Acidalius (1567-1595) and C. Rittershusius (1560-1613). Woodcut mark on title.

Prov. Alexandre Petau (d. 1672), who inherited the famous scholarly library of his father Paul Petau (1568-1614) and sold parts of it to various European collectors such as Isaac Vossius and Queen Christina of Sweden (large coloured armorial bookplate on front endpaper). - Collector's stamp.
