Rare 2nd ed. of Park's lively narrative of the hitherto little-known interior of Africa. Its immediate success and the fact that it was the first to tackle the mystery of the course of the Niger made it a classic of travel literature. Incl. a vocabulary of the Mandingo language. Ill. with an engr. portrait by T. Dickinson after H. Edridge, the map of Park's itinerary (hand-coloured borders), 3 views, 2 pl. of a lotus and a shea tree, and in the appendix: a map of North Africa "showing the progress of discovery and improvement", a chart of the lines of magnetic variation, a double page of music scores "A Negro Song from Mr. Park's Travels" (text by the Duchess of Devonshire, music by G.G. Ferrari).
