Lot description

3 vol., 8vo: [4]-320, [2]-338, [2]-260 pp.; 176 pl.

Later quarter green cloth, marbled paper on boards, flat spines (sl. rubbed).

Another issue of the second edition (1st 1768) by the French physician, naval engineer and botanist Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), one of the forerunners of modern agronomy and silviculture. Ill. with 176 full-page engr. plates in b/w after drawings by Aubriet, Mlle Basseporte and Le Berriays showing various fruit, whole and cut such as almonds, apricots, cherries, berries, apples, peaches, plums, pears and grapes etc. The first 4 plates in the 1st volume relate to size of fruit trees and their graftage. According to Nissen this edition must contain 181 plates and according to Stafleu & Cowan 180, but the numbering of the pl. is imprecise which makes it difficult to identify if or which pl. exactly are missing.
Ref. Nissen (BBI) 550. - Pritzel 2466. - Stafleu & Cowan 1546.
Prov. Joseph van Zuylen (1871-1962), Argenteau, Belgian politician (armorial bookpl.).
