Lot description

4to: 18-195-[1] ff. (toned, some spotting, marg. dampstaining, sm. hole in margin of title, lower half of f. 127v covered with blank paper, occ. contemp. ms. annot.).

Old embossed paper, flat spine, nice domino endpapers (sl. rubbed). Good copy.

First Greek edition of the "Apostolic Constitutions" or "Constitutions of the Holy Apostles", an important collection of prescriptions relating to the liturgy and the discipline of the faithful, in eight books, incorrectly attributed to Pope Clemens I and presumably composed in Antioch from 375 to 380 AD. The author is unknown, but could be considered to be the same author of the letters of Pseudo-Ignatius, perhaps the 4th-century Eunomian bishop Julian of Cilicia. The text is edited by the humanist theologian Fr. Turriani (1509-1584). Woodcut mark on title. Entirely printed in Greek. Ziletti printed the same year a Latin edition.
Ref. Edit16 2180. - USTC 804256. - Adams A-1334. - STC Italian (BL) 34. - Opac SBN. - BnF.
Prov. Walter Weddart (?) (ms. ownership entry on title).
