Essay (first 1793) by the American physician, politician, social reformer and humanitarian Benjamin Rush (1745-1813). During the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793 in Philadelphia Rush treated his patients with bleeding, purges using a.o. calomel and other medical techniques that often were ineffective and actually brought many patients closer to death. Rush's ideas on the treatment differed very much from those of experienced French doctors who came from the West Indies where they had outbreaks of Yellow Fever every year. During the epidemic, Rush gained applause for remaining in town and treating sometimes 100 patients per day, but many died.
