4to: engr. title-5/97-[8] pp. (dedicatory bound between pp. 12-13, table of contents at the end instead of the begin.; some pp. sl. yellowed, marg. foxing, engr. p. 61 upside down).
Contemp. calf, gilt decorated spine with raised bands, red sprinkled edges (sl. rubbed, head missing, corners +/- dulled, sl. trimmed).
First edition of this work describing the funeral rites of the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Scythians, Indians (some details concerning the American Indians of Peru), Hebrews, Turks and Christians. Illustrated with an engraved title figuring a portico and 32 nice etchings in-text (some showing instruments) executed after those of Girolamo Porro, ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces.
