Lot description

1 f. (13 x 23 cm), on vellum, in Latin (seal missing).

The knight Jan van Aarschot called van Schoonhoven ("Johannes miles de Arscoeht dictus de sconehove") - founder of the House of d'Arschot Schoonhoven - granted to the convent of Gempe the right of patronage on the parish church of Nieuwrode, on condition that his man, Oliver, could serve there all his life and that the chaplains who followed would be paid by the monastery.
This monastery ('s Hertogen Eiland - Insula Ducis) was founded in 1219 by Renier van Udekem in Pellenberg. The Park Abbey at Heverlee (south of Leuven) opposed the creation of this new convent because it was too close to the abbey. Henry I, Duke of Brabant, saved it by donating grounds and a watermill located in Gempe (now in Tielt-Winge, Brabant). The convent was destroyed during the French Revolution. Only the farmhouse, the wall and two entrance doors remain today.
