Lot description

Original photograph, hand-coloured albumen print, 26,5 x 21,8 cm, mounted on cardboard, not signed, printed legend pasted on verso.

Portrait of a Japanese building contractor in traditional costume standing in front of a bamboo wall. Photograph ascribed to Beato (1832-1909), an Italian-British photographer and one of the first to take photographs in East Asia.
Joined: Three photographs. Japan, ca. 2nd half 19th c. Original photographs, albumen prints, +/- 20 x 26 cm, mounted on cardboards, one not signed, another with photographer's stamp on the mount and a ms. piece of paper pasted on verso, third one signed. 1. School picture of young boys and men in various traditional costumes, most of them wearing a kepi. - 2. [H/K(?)]itamura, M. - Traditional family portrait. Pictures of deceased family members in oval shape pasted on top of the image. Note in Japanese pasted on verso. - 3. Temple of Zōjō-ji, a Jōdo-shū Buddhist temple in Tokyo which is located in the Shiba (?) neighbourhood of Minato. (4 pcs)
