Lot description

Composed of 3 albumen prints neatly mounted on heavy cardboard, 19,5 x 81 cm, not signed.

Striking panoramic view of one of the oldest cities in the world, built on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. The walled Old City with the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock, seen from the Mount of Olives just outside the city walls. Tancrède Dumas (1830-1905) was an Italian born photographer active in the Near East. After having learned photography from Alinari in Florence he opened a studio in Beirut in 1860, the same year as Bonfils. He was active between 1860 and 1890 and specialised in albumen print portraits of local characters as well as in images of interest to religious pilgrims.
