Lot description
Verviers, November 1908
German manuscript on paper (ca. 21 x 13,5 cm), [2]-215-[3] pp., expertly written.
Contemp. half leather by H. Adam, Verviers, gilt titled spine with 5 raised bands (tanned, edges rubbed), marbled endpapers, in limp slipcase. In very good condition.
Fair copy of an apparently unpublished German translation of the popular crime story "Called Back" (1883) of Hugh Conway (pen name of Frederick John Fargus, Bristol 1847-1885). The German version was made from the French translation by Bernard Pauncefote ("Hors des ténèbres", Brussels 1885). "Called Back" established the formula and format of the Victorian "shilling shocker". "This sensational story of murder, amnesia, Siberian exile, political assassination and detection made a tremendous hit. It was translated all over Europe, a dramatized version ran for a year, and the novel sold over 350,000 copies in four years." (Sutherland, Victorian Fiction, p. 222).
