Contemp. blind-stamped calf (rubbed, corners bumped), covers with central oval floral ornament within double ruled border, spine with 4 raised bands (rubbed, sm. def. at head & tail). Good copy.

First edition of this religious emblem book. Ill. with engr. title and 100 large engr. emblems by Jan Luyken (1649-1712) and his son Casper (1672-1708); each with a caption, Bible quotations and a poem. The plates are reduced copies of C. Weigel's "Ethica naturalis" (Nuremberg, ca. 1700) and show scenes of daily life, the occupations of the months, entertainment, natural elements, natural and human conditions, animals, etc.
