4to: [16]-244 pp. (some sl. foxing, sl. marg. damp stain to some ff. in begin. and one larger at the end, tear to pl. 6 strengthened, pl. 17 blurry, occ. sm. staining or soiling, moldy spots at the end, mod. ms. dates written in pencil on some pp.).

19th-c. English three-quarter sheep, marbled paper on covers, gilt-ruled flat spine (rubbed, front joint split, head & tail reinforced).

Illustrated with an engr. title (medallion portrait of the author above) and 20 full-page copper engravings by Giacomo and Francesco Valegio, identical to those of the 1625 edition published in Venice by Giacomo Scaglia. With a biography of Torquato Tasso written by the poet and jurist Guido Casoni (1561-1642). Text in 2 col.
Prov. From Cecil Sprigge to the "Illustrissimo Cavaliere St Clair Thomson: Favorisca accetare questo piccolo impegno, purtroppo indegno, della viva ricompenza". St Clair Thomson, i.e. the British surgeon and Professor of laryngology (1859-1943)? The journalist and author Cecil Jackson Squire Sprigge (1896-1959), son of Sir Squire Sprigge, physician, was educated at Eton and Kings College Cambridge. He was Italian correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Rome and he is the author of a.o. "The Development of Modern Italy" (ms. ex dono). - Mod. ms. entry.
