Lot description
Drawing, pen and brown ink, brown wash, 31,2 x 20,7 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on 18th-c. wove paper, vert. and horiz. fold lines, some foxing).
Under passe-partout.
A design for an unidentified engr. title plate, possibly the Book of Judges. A central cartouche depicts Moses and the Ark of Covenant. Alongside the edges are eight more cartouches featuring the major events in the Book of Judges, including "The Fall of Walls of Jericho", "Jephthah, returning home", "Jaël and Sisera", and "Samson destroying the Temple". Only the left side has been completed with wash and ornament, as the other half was to be executed identically during the engraving process.
Prov. Henry Hamal, noble family of Liège (ms. note on verso, Lugt 1231).
