Lot description

London, Printed for W. Wright, 1820

8vo: viii-318 pp.; 18 pl. (lvs ± browned, some plates more, foxing, contemp. ms. correction p. 34).

Half brick-red calf, flat spine lettered and finely ruled in gilt with a green label.

First edition ill. (complete) with 18 hand-coloured aquatints incl. title page attributed to Charles Williams, chief caricaturist for the printseller Fores, as irreverent as the Rowlandson plates which were his inspiration. "The author of the text (of Doctor Syntax in Paris) is unknown, but, although this is manifestly in plates and general style a Syntax imitation, the text might conceivably be genuinely by Combe" (Abbey).
Ref. Abbey, Travel 109. - Tooley, English books with coloured plates, 350-351 (Rowlandson, Syntax imitation).
