Lot description
Drawing, charcoal, heightened with white, 45 x 58,6 cm, laid paper, signed and dated at lower right "J. Worms / 8 Février 1862".
Under gilt wooden frame (not studied outside frame).
A rare work of Jules Worms' early period in Paris. Jules Worms (1832-1924) was born in a family of Parisian shopkeepers, and this drawing of a curiosity shop thus features a world with which he was very familiar. Soon afterwards the French Academic painter travelled to Spain, where he specialised in genre scenes depicting Spanish life, often comical and painted in a highly realistic manner with many details and bright colours. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Haggin Museum and the Clark Art Institute, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, the Musée Magnin in Dijon, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy.
