Lot description
Drawing, pen and brown ink with brown wash, heightened with white, 17,9 x 14,7 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on 18th-c. paper support, upper right corner professionally restored).
Under passe-partout.
Interesting mythological landscape drawing in a dynamic style which makes plausible a former attribution of the sheet to Abraham Genoels (1640-1723). Though born and burried in Antwerp, Genoels spent most of his career as a landscape painter in Paris (providing landscapes for Charles Lebrun) and in Rome. The drawing shows some affinity with attributed landscapes in brown wash to the same artist in the collection of the British Museum, such as "Landscape with a stream running under an arch of rock" (inv. 1836,0811.309).
Prov. Paul Sandby (1725-1809), painter and engraver (coll. stamp at lower left, Lugt 2112). - Bruce Ingram (1866-1963), journalist and art collector (coll. stamp on verso, Lugt1405a). - Michael Ingram (coll. stamp on verso Lugt1405b). - Sotheby's sale 08/12/2005, no. 81.
