Lot description
Drawing, red chalk, 26,2 x 19 cm, laid paper with watermark "VI", signed with red chalk at lower right corner "A. Houbraken del." (sm. unobtrusive tear at left edge, sm. wormhole at left edge).
Under passe-partout.
Venus or a nymph bringing an offering to a herm of Bacchus. Probably symbolising the union or balance between love and passion. Signed by Houbraken, it corresponds closely both in style and technique to other Houbraken drawings. Comparable to a drawing of "Ceres" in the collection of the British Museum (inv. Ff,4.103). Perhaps intended for Houbraken's series "Toneel van Sinnebeelden".
Prov. J. Goll Franckenstein (1772-1782), Amsterdam Banker (coll. stamp L. 2987), numbered 3724.
