Lot description
Engraving, 20,5 x 23 cm, laid paper with partial watermark, signed in plate at lower margin (some sm. brown stains, glued to passe-partout).
Under passe-partout. Nice dark impression.
Very rare and impressive engraving by Hendrick Goudt (1583-1648), who was trained in the humanist milieu of Hendrick Goltzius. The print features the visit of Jupiter and Mercury, disguised as travellers, to the house of Philemon and Baucis. Typical for Goudt's style are the splendid chiaroscuro effects he brings into his compositions. The composition is taken from a painting by Adam Elsheimer, with whom Goudt had collaborated during his sojourn in Rome in 1610. Accompanied by an engr. calligraphic Latin text in the lower margin. 2nd and final state.
