8vo (quires partly unopened).

Publisher's binding: blue paper boards, lettered labels on front cover and flat spine (spine soiled). Top edge trimmed.

Second printed Vale book illustrated by Ch. Ricketts with a red strapwork and violet border and a black initial on p. iii, and with sm. black ornaments in the text. Text in Vale type printed in black except for the colophon which is in red. Edition limited to 210 unnumbered copies on Arnold's hand-made paper. "Writers in the Saturday Review (4 July 1896) noted that "Ricketts and Hacon have done wisely in choosing what is probably the finest of all Landor's imaginary conversations". "The workmanship and design of the border", were, they felt, "beyond praise", concluding that "it is probably one of the most perfect books of its size ever published" (Watry).
