Lot description

Sm. 4to (one scribbling in blue at colophon).

Limp vellum by the Doves Bindery, flat spine titled in gilt (rubbed).

Text of the first edition printed by Richard Field for John Harrison in 1594, "with such changes only as set out overleaf" (cfr colophon). Neat typography printed in black, except the dedication and colophon which are printed in red, decorated with 3 red initials (on the title "The rape of Lucrece" and on the first word of the poem). "Cobden-Sanderson never used the full title of the poem, The Rape of Lucrece, but on 30 April 1915 he wrote in his diary that he had sent into the world this week "the cry of Lucrece for the violence done to it"" (Tidcombe). Edition limited to 185 unnumbered copies (incl. 10 on vellum), one the 175 on paper.
