The Cornhill Press was established in 1900 in Boston by the American book designer and painter Thomas Maitland Cleland (1880-1964), the Cornhill Press being named after the street where he lived. Because of financial issues, the press ceased activity in 1901 and only published 3 books under the imprint of "Cornhill Press". Cleland had already published two works in New York in 1898/9 but without the imprint of "Cornhill Press". Cleland began his career as a book designer for the Caslon Press and created titles for the Merrymount Press. He was later (1907-1908) the Art Director of McClure's Magazine and was hired by Art Director Henry Luce to design Fortune magazine.
