Vintage carbon print, 28,7 x 37 cm, mounted on board, not signed.

Rare photograph of the ruins of Ypres after a bombing raid, taken by the Australian photographer and adventurer James Francis "Frank" Hurley (1885-1962). He participated in a number of expeditions to Antarctica and served as an official photographer with the Australian forces during both world wars. He took many battlefield scenes during the 3rd battle of Ypres. This photo was exhibited at Grafton Galleries.
Joined, 2 orig. b/w photographs: 1. Belfry of Ypres under reconstruction. S.d. 18 x 24 cm, paper strip (missing some pieces) with typed legend pasted on lower border, copyright stamp on verso, not signed. The belfry of Ypres here at the left side with scaffolding on all sides standing around St Martin's Cathedral. The belfry was solemnly inaugurated by the Belgian King Leopold III in 1934 after its reconstruction post the disastrous bombing during WWI. March 1928. 12,5 x 17,5 cm, ms. legend in lower right corner "Wullepit, Poperinghe Maart 1928", not signed. Delivery by dog cart and bicycle to bakery J. Vanhoucke-Dezesher. (3 pcs)
