Lot description

Aquarelle, 42 x 13,5 cm, paper, signed with ink at lower right corner "Eug. Legendre" (some min. foxing).

Under glass, under gilt wooden frame (not studied outside frame).

Beautiful landscape drawing of Bruges seen from the east, near the Bonne-Chière mill and the Kruispoort. Recognisable towers and buildings are the Jerusalem chapel, the church of Our-Lady, St Anna and the Belfry. Eugène Legendre (1827-1900) was a Belgian painter, and considered an important member of the 19th-century Bruges school of painting. He studied painting at the Art Academies of Bruges and Antwerp, stayed for a short period in London and from 1860 he established himself in Bruges, where he was known for his city views. Some of his paintings are now in the Groeninge Museum of Bruges.
